San Francisco Bay and San Pablo Bay are the most prominent geographic features in the Bay Area. There are 8 toll bridges in the Bay Area. All the bridges only collect tolls one way. Transit service is available on all toll bridges, but not all bridges allow bicycles and pedestrians.

All toll bridges except the Golden Gate Bridge accept cash for toll payment. FasTrak electronic tolling tag is accepted on all bridges and is the preferred method for paying tolls. On the Golden Gate Bridge, "pay-by-plate" system is used for non-FasTrak drivers.

The toll for all bridges except the Golden Gate Bridge is set by the State legislature and voter-approved ballot measures to pay for construction, maintenance, and retrofit of the toll bridges, along with transit projects and services (e.g. BART and transbay buses).
