San Diego MTS introduced an overnight express service between Downtown San Diego and the San Ysidro border, with stops at various Blue Line stations. The service operates every 30 minutes when the Blue Line isn’t running. After departing Downtown San Diego, the bus takes the I-5 and serves three Blue Line stations before reaching the San Ysidro border. The end-to-end travel time is about 50 minutes.
The agency cannot operate a 24-hour service on the Blue Line because the rail corridor is shared with freight trains. Current regulations do not allow Blue Line light rail trains to occupy the corridor simultaneously with heavier freight trains. Since the Blue Line already operates during the day, freight trains can only run during overnight hours.
This weekend, MTS also improved frequency on many routes and added earlier service on Route 992, which connects Downtown San Diego with San Diego International Airport.
