In the event of a strike on the BART system, you may want to consider the following:

  • Adjust work schedule to avoid peak hours
  • Telecommute
  • Carpool (parking lot at BART station will be made available for carpooling at no cost)
  • Alternative transit (expect crowded buses and ferries)

Local transit is available at all BART stations. However, because transit workers at other agencies are also unionized, the buses will stop outside the BART property to avoid crossing the picket line. Bus stops are located on nearby streets close to BART stations.

Richmond - Fremont

Riders from stations along the Richmond - Fremont line have the option of taking AC Transit, which some routes run parallel to BART and serve two or more stations:

Notice Notice

AC Transit strike has been temporarily averted. Governor Brown appointed a board to investigate the contract dispute between AC Transit and one of its unions, ending the immediate threat of a service disruption.

72 and 72M 51A 1R 99

Routes include: Free charter bus service would be available from Fremont Station, San Leandro and El Cerrito del Norte Station to San Francisco. The buses would only operate during peak hours (5AM - 9AM, 3PM – 7PM). Round trip ticket must be obtained in the morning to ride the trip in the afternoon.

Amtrak Capitol Corridor trains operate along the East Bay. Richmond Station and Coliseum/Oakland Airport Station are shared with BART. Amtrak provides feeder bus service from the trains in Emeryville to San Francisco. Connection to ferry is also available at the Oakland Jack London Square Station.

Oakland Airport

AirBART shuttle has been suspended for the duration of the BART strike. AC Transit continues to serve the airport.

Concord line

Free charter bus service would be available from Lafayette Station, Walnut Creek Station and Concord Station to San Francisco. The buses would only operate during peak hours (5AM - 9AM, 3PM – 7PM). Round trip ticket must be obtained in the morning to ride the trip in the afternoon.

County Connection buses will stop outside of BART property in an event of a strike. Additional service may be provided.

County Connection 93X and Tri Delta Transit 201 buses provide the only transit connection between Pittsburg/Bay Point and Antioch areas served by Tri Delta Transit with Concord/Walnut Creek areas. Tri Delta Transit 200 bus goes from Pittsburg/Bay Point to Downtown Martinez where riders can transfer to Amtrak Capitol Corridor trains to Oakland or WestCAT 30Z to Hercules.

County Connection will also provide limited service from Concord and Walnut Creek to Downtown Oakland.

SolTrans 78 provides service from Walnut Creek and Pleasant Hill to Vallejo Ferry Terminal, connecting with ferries to San Francisco.

Dublin/Pleasanton line

Wheels buses will stop outside of BART property in an event of a strike.

Free charter bus service would be available from Dublin/Pleasanton Station to San Francisco. The buses would only operate during peak hours (5AM - 9AM, 3PM – 7PM). Round trip ticket must be obtained in the morning to ride the trip in the afternoon.

Wheels will also provide limited service from East Dublin/Pleasanton BART to Eastmont Transit Center where riders can transfer to AC Transit to SF and throughout the western East Bay.

Some ACE Trains will have timed connection with Capitol Corridor trains at Fremont/Centerville Station for connection to Oakland. ACE Trains also continue to San Jose for connection with Caltrain to San Francisco.

Transbay

Charter buses

Free charter buses will be available from these locations to Transbay Terminal during weekday peak hours.

Round trip ticket must be obtained in the morning to ride the trip in the afternoon.

Ferries

San Francisco Bay Ferry is available in the East Bay to the Ferry Building in San Francisco:

Expanded BART strike ferry schedules

Parking is expected to be extremely limited especially in the Jack London Square Ferry Terminal. Transit service is however available to that ferry terminal. It is also within a 10 minute walk from Amtrak's Oakland Jack London Square Station.

Special shuttle service will operate in Alameda to Main Street and Harbor Bay terminals. Valet bike parking will be available at the Main Street terminal.

AC Transit

AC Transit provides bus service across the Bay Bridge to Transbay Terminal. Following are routes that serve BART stations:

More Transbay route information is available here.

WestCAT

WestCAT Lynx from Hercules also serve Transbay Terminal. In the event of a strike, Lynx will operate throughout the day. Service on JX and JPX routes will be reduced.

SolTrans

SolTrans 80 will extend the route from El Cerrito del Norte to San Francisco Transbay Terminal in the event of a strike during morning and afternoon peak hours.

Schedule

Other bridges

Because the Bay Bridge would probably be too congested, you may want to consider taking buses on the other bridges.

Caltrain is available on the other side of the Bay and parking is available at most stations.

Peninsula and SFO

Caltrain

Caltrain provides service from the South Bay to San Francisco.

SamTrans

Bus stops at Colma and Daly City stations will be relocated off BART property. Daly City stops would be on DeLong Street. Colma stops would be at the SamTrans owned parking lot on the other side of the station. At Millbrae, El Camino buses would stay on El Camino.

SamTrans will operate a shuttle from Daly City and Colma stations to Transbay Terminal. SamTrans ECR serves all BART stations on the Peninsula except SFO and connects with Muni services on Mission Street. Muni's 14L-Mission Limited bus serves Daly City Station during weekday peak hours.

SamTrans provides regular bus service between the Peninsula and San Francisco

Hillsdale Shopping Center - San Francisco
All-Nighter: Palo Alto Station - San Francisco (Salesforce Transit Center)
East Palo Alto - SFO - San Bruno BART/San Francisco
Express: Foster City - San Francisco

San Francisco International Airport

In the event of a strike, SFO will provide free shuttle between SFO and Millbrae Station, where passengers can transfer to and from Caltrain. SFO will also run free shuttle between the Airport and the South San Francisco Ferry Terminal, where passengers can transfer to ferry to Oakland and Alameda (limited service).

SamTrans routes KX and 292 provide service between the airport and Downtown San Francisco.

Shared-ride vans are available at the airport without reservation.

SFO information

San Francisco

Muni Metro will continue to provide service under Market Street. All BART stations except 16th Street Mission and 24th Street Mission are served by one or more Muni Metro lines. Bus service is available to Downtown SF from the two stations that aren't served by Muni Metro.
