Beginning April 1, 2019, several RideKC Johnson County routes will be modified to improve service efficiency. These changes are the first phase of implementation the Comprehensive Operations Analysis conducted in 2018.

In October 2018, draft proposed changes were posted for RideKC Johnson County routes. Three public meetings and two "pop-up" meetings at bus stops were held in October 2018 to receive feedback from riders and the general public. Customers were also invited to submit comments by phone, email, or by completing an online survey.

RideKC has reviewed all public comments and conducted additional technical review of the proposed changes. This has led to a reduction in the number of proposed changes for implementation on April 1, 2019. Additional changes may take place in late 2019 after additional data review and public involvement.

The changes planned for April 1, 2019, are as follows:

402 Johnson-Quivira: Service on Broadmoor, Foxridge, 51st Street, and Lamar will be discontinued due to low ridership. The route will travel on Johnson Drive between Nieman and Lamar, and on Martway Street between Lamar and Mission Transit Center. Additional stops will be added to this segment of the route. The rest of the 402 route alignment will not change, except for minor schedule adjustments to account for the route change.

405 Nall-Downtown: Route eliminated due to low ridership. Alternate route options include:

  • 404 Metcalf-Downtown: operates on Metcalf, to Downtown Kansas City, Missouri.
  • 401 Metcalf-Plaza: operates on Metcalf, to Mission Transit Center, and the Country Club Plaza and UMKC in Kansas City, Missouri.
  • 107 7th Street-Parallel: operates from Mission Transit Center to Kansas City, Kansas.

435 JoCo-Downtown Midday: For all trips, the south end of the downtown route will be adjusted. From northbound Main Street, buses will turn left on Pershing to get to I-35, rather than continuing on Main Street north of Pershing.

482 Overland Park Flex: Due to high ridership and capacity constraints, an additional day of service will be added to the route each week. The route will now operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, except on holidays. The route will no longer operate on Tuesdays. The schedule is also being adjusted to help keep buses on time.

519 Olathe Express: Route is being reduced to six northbound morning and six southbound afternoon trips. In addition, all trips will use a consistent alignment in downtown, except for one morning trip that will still provide express service to Crown Center. One "reverse commute" trip will still be provided in each direction but will no longer stop at Mission Transit Center. For all trips, the south end of the downtown route will be adjusted. From northbound Main Street, buses will turn left on Pershing to get to I-35, rather than continuing on Main Street north of Pershing. Schedules will be adjusted to provide more consistent spacing between buses.

563 Shawnee Express: For all trips, the south end of the downtown route will be adjusted. From northbound Main Street, buses will turn left on Pershing to get to I-35, rather than continuing on Main Street north of Pershing. Schedules will be adjusted to provide more consistent spacing between buses.

569 South OP Express: For all trips, the south end of the downtown route will be adjusted. From northbound Main Street, buses will turn left on Pershing to get to I-35, rather than continuing on Main Street north of Pershing. Schedules will be adjusted to provide more consistent spacing between buses.

595 Gardner-OP Express: For all trips, the south end of the downtown route will be adjusted. From northbound Main Street, buses will turn left on Pershing to get to I-35, rather than continuing on Main Street north of Pershing.

Change to Bus Flagging Policy

Effective April 1, 2019, riders will no longer be allowed to use a hand signal or "flag" the bus at locations that are not marked with RideKC bus stop signs. Passengers will only be able to board or get off the bus at marked bus stops.

Over the past few years, many bus stops have been added along routes in Johnson County based on regional guidelines, and there are now bus stops that are adequately spaced along local bus routes. This change will improve passenger safety and will bring Johnson County bus routes in line with transit industry safety standards. This practice will ensure that passengers board at safe locations, bus operators can see passengers that are waiting for the bus, and improve on-time performance due to making fewer stops.

If you currently flag the bus along a RideKC Johnson County route, please determine the nearest marked stop to your location. If you need assistance, you can call 816-346-0300 or email planning@kcata.org for help in finding the nearest stop. The RideKC mobile app, other third-party apps, and Google Maps also display existing stop locations.

If you would like to request the addition of a stop, please call 816-346-0300 or email planning@kcata.org and describe the desired location. Stops will not be added if there is another stop nearby, or if it is a potentially unsafe location due to traffic patterns or other factors.
