Monterey Road is a major north-south route extending from just south of Downtown San Jose to Gilroy. It runs adjacent to the historic Southern Pacific Railroad's mainline between San Jose and Gilroy and continues from 1st Street in Downtown San Jose. The road was once designated as U.S. Route 101 but was gradually replaced by the current 101 freeway, which began construction in the 1950s. In the early 1980s, after the final segment of the 101 freeway bypass between San Jose and Morgan Hill was completed, Monterey Road lost its 101 designation entirely. However, it remains an alternate route to the freeway.

Monterey Road serves the South San Jose suburbs as well as the cities of Morgan Hill and Gilroy, passing through largely rural areas between these cities. The road is served by local bus routes and Caltrain.
