Santa Monica Boulevard is a major east-west road stretching from Sunset Junction in the east to Ocean Avenue in Downtown Santa Monica, near the Pacific Ocean in the west. It passes through West Hollywood and Beverly Hills. Santa Monica Blvd once had Pacific Electric trolleys running from Downtown LA to Santa Monica along its entire length. The road was formerly part of U.S. Route 66, and parts of it are currently designated as State Route 2. A freeway was once planned to run parallel to the road, but it was never built due to opposition from Beverly Hills.
