About the route

Route 40 is a frequent local route connecting Downtown Oakland, Eastmont, and Bay Fair BART via Foothill Blvd and Bancroft Avenue. It ranks as AC Transit's third highest ridership route. Throughout most of the day, every other bus runs between Eastmont and Bay Fair. After 8 p.m. (7 p.m. on weekends), there is no service between Eastmont and Bay Fair.

The route and route number date back to before the formation of AC Transit, when the Key System operated the service.
