About the route
72L is a limited stop service between Contra Costa College and Oakland Jack London Square via San Pablo Avenue (between Contra Costa College and Downtown Oakland). Routes 72 and 72M provide local service largely along the same path. This route serves as an alternative during BART service disruptions affecting stations in El Cerrito.
Previously known as the 72R rapid service, it was AC Transit's first rapid bus service, operating from 2003 until 2025. The 72R offered more frequent service to justify the rapid designation.
