About the route

Highway 17 Express is the main intercity connector between Santa Cruz and San Jose. It is operated by Santa Cruz METRO and functions as an Amtrak Thruway service. Joint ticketing is available from both Amtrak and Greyhound. Buses may wait up to 15 minutes for late Capitol Corridor connections.

Selected weekday peak-hour trips serve Downtown San Jose and San Jose State University, as well as along Scotts Valley Drive. Selected peak weekday and weekend trips do not stop at Cavallaro Transit Center.

Highway 17 Express began in 1990 as a weekday commuter service following the Loma Prieta Earthquake. At that time, the corridor had a dedicated Caltrain/Amtrak connector and private carriers like Greyhound and Peerless Stages. Daily service on the Highway 17 Express route started in 2004 when it became part of the Amtrak Thruway service. Greyhound also provided service on the corridor (as part of longer route to Los Angeles) until 2020 when travel declined due to COVID.
