About the route

The Blue Line provides core north-south service along the I-5 corridor between UC San Diego, Downtown San Diego, and the Mexican border at San Ysidro. This route operates every 7 minutes between America Plaza and San Ysidro on weekdays and every 15 minutes on the entire route at most times. This is offically named "UC San Diego Blue Line" to reflect corporate naming rights.

The Blue Line between Downtown and San Ysidro was the first segment of the trolley system, constructed and opened for service in 1981. The line between Downtown and Old Town was built during the 1990s. The original line was extensively upgraded in the 2010s under the "Trolley Renewal" project, which raised the platforms and introduced new low-floor light rail cars, replacing the original fleet. The line between Old Town and UCSD opened in November 2021. For more history...
