This station is one of the original Loop Elevated stations and maintains a historical appearance. It also serves as the transfer point to Metra and Amtrak trains at Chicago Union Station on the other side of the Chicago River. Although the station is officially designated as a city landmark, elevators were installed in 2018 to make it accessible for disabled riders.

The entrances to the station from the street are located around the intersection of Wells and Quincy. CTA ticket machines are available at the station house by each platform, which sell reloadable Ventra card, single-ride, or 1 day ticket. All riders must pass through the turnstile with a valid Ventra card, ticket, contactless bank card, or mobile device with Apple/Samsung/Android Pay.

This elevated station features side platforms. There's no direct access between the platforms (need to exit the paid area of station). Elevators connect from the street to the headhouse on the platform level.

At this station, Pink, Orange, and Purple lines provide clockwise service in the Loop, using only the inner track (northbound platform). The Brown Line offers counter-clockwise service, stopping only on the outer track (southbound platform).
