SamTrans fares

SamTrans accepts cash and Clipper Cards (pay or tag card when boarding the bus). It also offers various passes and tokens. Transfers and day passes are not available on SamTrans.

List of pass and token vendors

Riders can pay one way fares or load monthly passes with Clipper Cards. There's no multi-ride discount (like tokens) available on Clipper. Bags of tokens are available at selected retailers.

For youth and senior riders, special Clipper cards are necessary to pay youth/senior fares or load youth/senior passes. To obtain these cards, you will need to submit an application to these transit offices in person. Documentation proving eligibility is also required.

Local routes

Apply on route KX within San Mateo County.

Local routes 391, 292, 297, out of San Francisco

Fares apply only for southbound boardings in San Francisco on these routes. Local fares apply for northbound trips to San Francisco or within San Mateo County.

For adults, a local pass with a $2.00 cash upgrade is accepted. For riders with Clipper cards loaded with local monthly pass, a $2.00 upgrade fare will be paid automatically with e-cash on the Clipper Card. If there's no e-cash on the card, the card is rejected and the entire fare must be paid in cash.

Route KX to and from San Francisco

Route KX within San Mateo County charges local fares.

Northbound riders to San Francisco paying with Clipper cards need to tag on the card reader again when getting off the bus in San Francisco. For riders with Clipper cards loaded with local monthly pass, a $3.00 upgrade fare will be paid with e-cash on the Clipper Card. If there's no e-cash on the card, the card is rejected and the entire fare must be paid in cash.

Tokens

SamTrans offers tokens for local adult and youth fares. They are sold in a package of 10. Multiple tokens, or a token with cash upgrade, can be used on expresses buses or 391, 292, or 397 leaving San Francisco.

Interagency transfer arrangements

The following passes are accepted for local fare credit on all SamTrans routes anywhere:

• BART Plus tickets
• Caltrain monthly pass with 2 zones or more
• Golden Gate Transit 20-ride ticket book with SamTrans sticker

AC Transit and Dumbarton Express passes are accepted as local fare credit at shared stops only.

VTA day and monthly passes are accepted as local fare credit at all bus stops in Menlo Park and Palo Alto, which are specially marked.

Muni sticker for SamTrans passes costs $55. Passes with Muni sticker are available in selected retail outlets mostly in Daly City/San Francisco area (except Safeway).
