Tamien is a convenient park and ride station near downtown San Jose and a transfer point between Caltrain and the VTA Light Rail systems.

VTA Light Rail platforms are located in the median of CA-87. The Caltrain platforms are located east of the freeway. A pedestrian walkway (by CA-87 on ramp at Lelong St) connects Light Rail and Caltrain.

The station is named after a local Native American tribe (Tamien) that once settled in the area.
