BART farecard/ticket

Fares on BART vary depending on station and distance traveled. Passengers purchase farecards (tickets) from ticket machines that are to be inserted into fare gates at the start and end of each trip. The fares are deducted from the farecards after each ride. Every passenger will need his or her own farecard.

BART does not offer daily, weekly, monthly unlimited use passes. Fare discounts on BART are only provided when the farecards are sold. The same fares are deducted at the fare gates regardless of ticket type.

If you enter the fare gates and your farecard does not have sufficient funds for your trip, you will have to use add fare machine to increase your ticket's value so that you can exit the system.

Clipper card can be used on BART instead of BART farecards.

To ride BART with Clipper, make sure the card has sufficient e-cash, BART value, or a valid Muni Fast Pass (intra-SF trips only). Place the card on the reader (the dark blue circular pad on top of every faregate...or the side of every wide ADA faregate) to enter and exit the system. Proper fare will be deducted.

All BART ticket machines can add e-cash values onto existing Clipper cards (not other passes from other transit agencies). BART machines however cannot issue new Clipper Cards.

High Value ticket (the only discount program on BART) is available on Clipper by setting up Autoload through the Clipper web site. The fare dollars ordered under the High Value ticket can only be used on BART, and those dollars must be paid from a bank or a credit card account (No conversion of existing e-cash to BART values).

Clipper card can now be used for parking payment/validation under the EZ Rider program.

Inter-agency fare arrangements

BART riders may take advantage of these discount programs when transferring to local transit:

BART to bus transfer One time use transfer for a discounted one way fare on most buses
BART to Muni transfer Two part transfer for discounted rides (or free rides from Daly City) on Muni. This discount is only available for riders using Clipper cards.
BART Plus Semi-monthly ticket valid on BART and participating local transit
Muni Fast Passes are accepted for unlimited rides between all stations within San Francisco.

Riders on Capitol Corridor can buy $10 BART tickets for $8 on the Cafe Car.

The following table applies to riders using Senior, RTC Discount Card (Disabled), and Youth (age eligible) Clipper cards. Red and Green magnetic BART tickets continue to sell at a discount price with regular fares deducted.

Fare quirks

There are some quirks in the fare structure due to subsidies that apply to certain stations. In some cases, BART fares violate the "triangle inequality" (a mathematical term meaning that a trip should not cost more than the sum of its parts). Although in most cases exiting and reentering the station in the middle of a trip cost more, there are several cases, involving the station Bay Fair or Orinda, where it is possible to exit and enter the station in the middle and have the total cost less than if you had simply stayed inside the system.

For example, if one was traveling from Dublin/Pleasanton to Fremont, the regular fare is $4.35. However, at the transfer point of Bay Fair, if one exits and re-enters the station, the total trip would cost $1.75 + $1.75 = $3.50, which is significantly cheaper. (Since the required transfer at Bay Fair in this case has a few minutes of waiting time, this does not slow down the trip. However, in other cases where one would have to get off a train that otherwise doesn't need a transfer, one would take longer by breaking up the trip.)

  • Coliseum/Oakland Airport - Bay Fair - Fremont: $1.75 + $1.75 = $3.50 < $3.60
  • MacArthur - Orinda - Concord: $1.75 + $1.75 = $3.50 < $3.65
  • Orinda - Concord - Pittsburg/Bay Point: $1.75 + $1.75 = $3.50 < $3.65
  • Orinda - Pleasant Hill - Pittsburg/Bay Point: $1.75 + $1.75 = $3.50 < $3.65
  • Orinda - Walnut Creek - Pittsburg/Bay Point: $1.75 + $1.75 = $3.50 < $3.65
