Mission Street is a major street and transit corridor, as well as the longest street in San Francisco. It stretches from the southern border with Daly City, through the Mission District and Civic Center, to the downtown waterfront. From South Van Ness Avenue, it runs parallel, a block south of Market Street. The downtown portion serves as a secondary transit corridor and a primary street for automobiles accessing local businesses, driveways, and parking garages, as mid and lower Market Street is closed to private vehicles.

In downtown and through the Mission District, Mission Street has side-running bus/taxi lanes. Cars and trucks can use the lane for right turns, driveway access, or curbside parking. The street also has left turn restrictions at many intersections.

Underground - BART

BART runs under Mission Street in the Mission District with two stations. In downtown, BART and Muni Metro run under Market Street, a large block north of Mission Street.
