The Embarcadero is a boulevard running along the San Francisco waterfront between Fisherman's Wharf to the north and Oracle Park to the south, passing by the Ferry Building and Market Street. It has four lanes for automobile and truck traffic, along with bike lanes. The road also features a wide median for Muni rail lines and a broad shared bike/pedestrian path on the bay side, which is part of the Bay Trail.

On the south side, the Embarcadero becomes King Street, which connects to the I-280 freeway. Before the 1989 earthquake, the central part of the Embarcadero featured a double-deck elevated freeway connected to the Bay Bridge, built in the 1950s. The freeway was removed due to damage, and there was little political will to replace it with another elevated structure. Before the current multi-modal boulevard was built, the Embarcadero had a freight-only train track serving the piers along the waterfront when the area was mostly industrial.

Besides public transit, the Embarcadero offers pedicabs and water taxis.

Underground - BART, Muni Metro

BART and Muni Metro Embarcadero Station is located a block from the Embarcadero and the Ferry Building.

Surface transit - Streetcar, Muni Metro, bus

The Embarcadero is served by the historic F Market & Wharves streetcar between the Ferry Building and Fisherman's Wharf in the north, and the N Judah between Folsom Street and Oracle Park in the south. To travel between the northern and southern parts, transfer between the F and N lines at Market Street and Main Street, above the Embarcadero Station. The blocks between Market Street and Folsom have tracks, and Muni has operated historic streetcars directly between Fisherman's Wharf and Oracle Park, although infrequently, but has discontinued post-pandemic.
