The following Muni stations have faregates installed:

Although the faregates act as a deterrent to those who intend to evade fares, they are also confusing for new riders, especially when not all faregates are staffed to provide assistance.

Cash riders

  1. Go to faregates staffed with a station attendent.
  2. Change dollar bills to coins at a coin changing machine or a BART ticket machine. Faregates don't take bills.
  3. Insert exact fare into any faregate through the top slot.
  4. The faregate will then issue a transfer. Take the transfer and keep it as proof of payment.

Muni pass riders

  1. Insert the pass into any faregate through the front slot.

Riders with transfers, Muni sticker, BART plus, and other interagency passes

  1. If the faregates are staffed, use the faregate next to the attendent and show your pass or transfer.
  2. If the faregates are not staffed, use the manual swing gate on the side.

There's no need to show or insert any tickets or passes when exiting.
