The following Muni stations have faregates installed:
Although the faregates act as a deterrent to those who intend to evade fares, they are also confusing for new riders, especially when not all faregates are staffed to provide assistance.
Cash riders
- Go to faregates staffed with a station attendent.
- Change dollar bills to coins at a coin changing machine or a BART ticket machine. Faregates don't take bills.
- Insert exact fare into any faregate through the top slot.
- The faregate will then issue a transfer. Take the transfer and keep it as proof of payment.
Muni pass riders
- Insert the pass into any faregate through the front slot.
Riders with transfers, Muni sticker, BART plus, and other interagency passes
- If the faregates are staffed, use the faregate next to the attendent and show your pass or transfer.
- If the faregates are not staffed, use the manual swing gate on the side.
There's no need to show or insert any tickets or passes when exiting.
