The following Muni stations have faregates installed:

Although the faregates act as a deterrent to those who intend to evade fares, they are also confusing for new riders, especially when not all faregates are staffed to provide assistance.

Muni is currently in the process of replacing the fare gates. New fare gates are available at selected locations.

With the new fare gates, Clipper Card will be the preferred method to enter Muni Metro system. One way cash riders will have to buy a Clipper-based Muni ticket (25 cents extra) at the stations that can be reused. Paper transfers will no longer be issued at Muni Metro stations (but will be issued if fare is paid on Muni Metro vehicles or buses).

Old gates New gates
Cash riders
  1. Go to faregates staffed with a station attendent.
  2. Change dollar bills to coins at a coin changing machine or a BART ticket machine. Faregates don't take bills.
  3. Insert exact fare into any faregate through the top slot.
  4. The faregate will then issue a transfer. Take the transfer and keep it as proof of payment.
  1. Purchase a ticket from a new ticket vending machines. (a new ticket costs 25 cents extra on top of the regular fare. Each ticket is good for 90 days and can be reloaded from the ticket machines with no extra charge.)
  2. Tap the ticket on the Clipper logo to open the fare gates.
Paper Muni pass riders
  1. Insert the pass into any faregate through the front slot.
  1. Slide the paper monthly pass on the temporary readers located on top of the fare gates.
New Muni ticket and Clipper Card
  1. Tap the card on the Clipper reader at some gates, or on the standalone reader by the station agent booth.
  1. Tap the card on the Clipper logo at the fare gates.
Paper transfers, Muni sticker, BART plus, and other interagency passes
  1. If the faregates are staffed, use the faregate next to the attendent and show your pass or transfer.
  2. If the faregates are not staffed, use the manual swing gate on the side.

There's no need to show or insert any tickets or passes when exiting.
