Market - Van Ness via California Street
7 days a week. Holiday service varies.

About the route

California Cable Car Line operates from Market Street/Embarcadero Station to Van Ness Avenue through Nob Hill. The cable cars on this line are double-ended, meaning they can operate from both ends. There is no turntable at either end of the route. At Powell and California, it connects with Powell-Mason and Powell-Hyde lines.

Cable car fares are charged, and passengers can pay the fare to the conductor onboard. Alternatively, the Clipper and Muni Mobile App can be used for payment.

The California Line opened in 1878. Until 1951, it was operated by the private California Street Cable Railroad Company, and the line extended as far west as Presidio Avenue. The City of San Francisco acquired the line after the company discontinued service. In 1954, despite opposition, the City discontinued the segment west of Van Ness Avenue. The line was completely rebuilt between 1982 and 1984.
