Part of the route runs on the 101 freeway, bypassing the Mission District. This line has two sub-routes (8AX and 8BX) that operate during weekday peak hours instead of the 8. The 8AX and 8BX make stops on portions of the 8 route.
At Market Street, inbound 8 buses to Fisherman's Wharf run on 3rd Street onto Kearny Street, while outbound buses to City College run on Stockton onto 4th Street. During peak hours, Route 8 buses may operate non-stop on Potrero instead of Highway 101 due to freeway traffic congestion.
