🚍 Union-Stockton: Lyon and Greenwich - 4th & King Caltrain via Chinatown
7 days a week. Holiday service varies.

About the route

The 45 Union/Stockton runs from the eastern edge of the Presidio and the Cow Hollow neighborhood to 4th & King Caltrain via Union Street and Stockton Street, passing through Russian Hill, North Beach, Chinatown, and Union Square. At Market Street, inbound 45 buses to Lyon & Greenwich travel on 3rd Street onto Kearny Street, while outbound buses to Caltrain run on Stockton onto 4th Street. Both 3rd and 4th streets have side-running red dedicated bus lanes. The 30-Stockton and T Third Street provide parallel service between Caltrain and Chinatown.

Before the conversion to buses in 1950, the route on Union Street was a streetcar line known as "E Union," which opened in 1913. Before the E Line, there was a cable car route built by the Presidio & Ferries Railway in 1880, which was rebuilt as a streetcar in 1906. The bus route that replaced it was designated as 41-Union, serving Downtown SF. When the 45 route adopted the current alignment in 1988, the 41 route was reduced to peak hours only until 2020, when it was discontinued due to COVID.
